Inspiring Workspaces: Infusing Energy and Aesthetics with Feng Shui Principles

4 Mins read

When we work – whether in a commercial office setting or our own home office – many times, we don’t think about how our surroundings can impact our overall mood and productivity levelsHowever, according to the principles of Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement, many things contribute to creating an optimal working setting or potentially an imbalance of energy that can lead to various distractions.

By understanding and applying Feng Shui principles to your workspace, you can create a much richer working space that can bring you more harmony and balance while helping to support your professional goals.

What is Feng Shui and How Can It Apply In Workplaces?

Many people have heard the term “Feng Shui” when referring to certain design spaces or even the mood or ambiance set in settings like therapy centers or art studios. However, feng shui is actually an ancient Chinese art form that has existed for thousands of years.

The core belief of Feng Shui is that the way certain aesthetics are placed and arranged in a space will have either a positive or negative influence on the flow of energy – also known as “chi.” How freely chi is able to flow through an area will play an important role in how well someone feels and bring more balance to their personal and work lives.

In workplace settings, Feng Shui can be used to create a more inviting and productive working atmosphere that is much more conducive to creativity, inspiration, and more positive thoughts and mental well-being. This can be successfully unlocked through careful selection and positioning of office furniture and decorations, color schemes, choice of lighting, and incorporating the right balance of natural elements.

Establishing the Command Position

Most people don’t put much thought into where and how they place their working desks in a room. While some might prefer to face a window, others may simply place the desk in an area that makes the most sense to them.

However, in feng shui, where you sit when working plays an important role in the level of control or sense of confidence in your awareness. This is called the command position, and there are certain criteria associated with finding the right location.

In order to establish a command position in your office setting, you should have a solid wall behind you while facing the entryway to your working area. If possible, you should also avoid having a window behind you, as this can add a sense of insecurity and lead to unconscious feelings of vulnerability and distraction.

Maintaining Clutter-Free Areas

Perhaps, one of the easiest feng shui principles for individuals to get behind is the idea of maintaining a clutter-free working area. It’s very hard to get things accomplished when your desk is messy and you can’t find what you need to get your job done properly.

Excessive clutter in an office can greatly impact positive energy flow in feng shui. To counter this, it’s important to maintain a clutter-free working environment and organize your desk and surrounding areas.

While some people may prefer to have a few desk ornaments or decorations in their working area, feng shui principles prioritize having only the essentials that you need day-to-day. Other desk items should be tucked away until they’re needed, making it much easier to stay focused and keeping your working area functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Allowing In Natural Light and Airflow

Lighting and airflow are both essential when creating a working space you can be in for several hours a day. In feng shui, these elements represent life and vitality and help to reduce stagnant and draining negative energy.

As you create your working space, consider the natural light provided by skylights or windows. Whenever possible, arrange your working area so you can use as much natural light as possible. If there is too much natural light, use blinds or curtains to help filter light as needed.

Having good air circulation is also important. During the summer, open your windows regularly to let more fresh air in and use air purifiers or diffusers to remove any pollutants in the air and improve its quality.

Applying Color Psychology

Everyone has different tastes when it comes to choosing color schemes for their office space. However, in feng shui, there are psychological elements associated with various color choices that can be representative of different moods or even life goals of individuals.

In feng shui, colors are often categorized according to the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element is linked to particular colors and characteristics. For example, green represents growth and renewal, while red symbolizes passion and energy.

In other situations, using calming blues or greens in areas where you need to focus can promote concentration and tranquility. Adding pops of red or orange in creative spaces can stimulate energy and enthusiasm. Earth tones like brown or yellow can create a sense of grounding and stability, while metallic accents can help support clarity and precision.

Incorporating Nature Into the Office

Natural elements are a large part of feng shui principles and play an important role in connecting us with the world we live in. Looking for opportunities to incorporate these elements into our workplace helps to deepen our connection with the earth and leads to a sense of peace when working day-to-day.

There are many different ways to incorporate natural elements into your office. You can choose a variety of indoor plants like peace lilies or bamboo to decorate your working area. Just be sure to position them carefully so they aren’t cluttering your workspace.

If you have enough space to work with, you can also consider incorporating a table fountain or images of nature on your walls. These can be great ways to add more nature to your office and can greatly support your overall feelings of well-being and inspiration.
