Women entrepreneurs everywhere are balancing the demands of business ownership with family life, showcasing resilience, adaptability, and the courage to pursue their dreams without sacrificing personal priorities. These journeys challenge the traditional notion of “having it all” and instead highlight a redefined vision of success, empowering aspiring and current entrepreneurs to find a balance that works for them.
After a rewarding 20-year career in real estate, I felt ready to take the leap into business ownership. While the prospect was daunting as a mother of two, I knew there was an exciting opportunity to redefine success – one that allowed me to balance both entrepreneurship and motherhood on my own terms. Now, just three months since opening my Floor Coverings International franchise, I’m proud to have been named the highest revenue yielding franchisee in the system in the first 90 days, all while managing the fulfilling challenges of being a mom.
Here are insights and actionable tips on how women can approach entrepreneurship with a fresh perspective, embracing both their business ambitions and family roles.
Redefining “Having It All”
The traditional view of “having it all” – excelling in every area of life at all times – is not only unrealistic but counterproductive. It is time for a revolutionary mindset shift. Having it all isn’t about achieving perfection in every role. Instead, it’s about balance and prioritizing what truly matters. That shift alone allows us to tap into potential we didn’t know we had.
Mothers considering entrepreneurship need to first embrace this change. It can reduce pressure, enabling them to be more present and effective in both business and family life. This new definition of success isn’t about external achievements but about personal fulfillment, making meaningful contributions, and creating a legacy for one’s family.
Mastering Time Management
Juggling a business and family requires a strategic approach to time. My secret, time blocking: a technique that has helped me keep a structured balance between work and family obligations. By prioritizing “low-effort, high-impact” tasks, I’ve been able to maximize productivity and make room for family without feeling stretched thin.
For busy momtrepreneurs, it’s essential to focus on what moves the needle and avoid overloading your schedule with tasks that don’t add much value. By setting realistic daily goals and creating boundaries around family time, you can help ensure that priorities are met and that you’re not compromising on the quality of either role.
You also must understand that momtrepreneurship isn’t a part-time commitment, it’s a lifestyle. To make this lifestyle work, building a solid support system both inside and outside the business is key.
I strategically poured into hiring and empowering a talented team within my Floor Coverings International business to ensure smooth operations and optimal results. Beyond the business, I also rely on a network of support from family and friends. This support system has allowed me the freedom to prioritize other aspects of my life, as well.
It’s time to remove the stigma around seeking help. There’s no shame in building a community of people who believe in you and want to see you succeed, both as a mom and a business owner. It takes a village to make entrepreneurship and motherhood work in harmony.
Mentorship for the Next Generation
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey as a Floor Coverings International franchisee is the opportunity to serve as a role model for my children.
By involving my kids in small tasks within the business, such as putting out flyers or helping set up the office, I’m creating moments of mentorship that instill values like hard work, resilience, and passion. To keep it fun, I often gamify these tasks, making business activities an enjoyable learning experience. This hands-on approach teaches them the value of perseverance and allows them to witness firsthand the rewards of entrepreneurship.
For me, being a “momtrepreneur” means more than just running a business, it means inspiring my children to dream big and pursue their passions with confidence.
The Evolving Definition of Success
My definition of success has evolved significantly over the years. Early in my career, success was tied to job titles and financial rewards. But today, it’s about the impact I’m able to make by owning a Floor Coverings International franchise, for both customers and my family.
Success to me now is about happiness, fulfillment, and knowing that I’m creating a positive environment for my kids and my team.
For any mom considering entrepreneurship, my advice is simple: Believe in yourself, lean on those around you, and remember that you don’t have to be perfect to succeed. Find a business opportunity you believe in and embrace the entrepreneurial journey – it is possible to run a successful business and a loving household without sacrificing one for the other.
