Are You Ready For the Future?

2 Mins read

IDC has released its 2026 predictions for small and medium businesses, which are part of its IDC Futurescape: Worldwide Small and Medium-Sized Business 2026 Predictions.

This kicks off our week-long look at 2026 predictions and insights for small business owners, which starts Monday, December 15th, with an insightful post by serial entrepreneur Elizabeth Gore of Hello Alice.

Check your readiness and prep with what IDC predicts:

By 2026

60% of SMBs will select software vendors based on embedded security and compliance readiness, causing a shift in vendor differentiation from feature depth to risk mitigation simplicity.

By 2027

50% of SMBs globally will routinely leverage GenAI tools when researching IT purchases, leading SMBs to invest in resources and employee training to use GenAI to vet technology solutions.

Over 50% of SMBs will invest in AI-ready hardware, including edge devices, making it essential for growth, operational efficiency, and competitiveness.

Driven by the widespread adoption of AI and Agentic AI, 70% of medium-sized businesses will achieve a 2x faster digital payback, maximizing value delivery while tightly controlling costs.

25% of SMBs will work with AI-native MSPs/CSPs to accelerate innovation, reduce costs, and align with digital growth ambitions.

80% of SMBs will scale back cross-border e-commerce due to compliance burdens and trade fragmentation, driving more standardized assortments and a 33% drop in niche categories.

By 2028

65% of small businesses will leverage GenAI to support their marketing efforts and boost brand awareness across channels, resulting in a 25% reduction in time to create and launch marketing campaigns.

60% of SMBs will engage directly with cloud-based vendors, driven by the rise in marketplaces that enable quick solution discovery, faster deployment, and improved cost efficiency.

By 2029

60% of SMBs will utilize unified communications and contact center solutions with advanced AI capabilities, enhancing customer interactions through personalization and automation.

Preparing Your for the Future

IDC’s predictions may feel a little technical or dense, but the takeaway for small business owners is actually simple: change is coming fast, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. You don’t need to understand every acronym or emerging tech trend to move your business forward—you just need to stay open, pay attention to the shifts, and take manageable steps toward smarter tools and stronger systems.

My goal with this piece and next week’s 2026 Predictions series is to help cut through the noise and translate these big-picture forecasts into practical insights you can actually use. Think of this series as your guide through the fog, helping you spot what matters, ignore what doesn’t, and prepare your business for a future that’s full of possibilities.
